Classic Western Writer Tom West Complete Book List

Image
So many Western writers — how to pick a few favourites? Louis L’Amour, of course.  Max Brand, who I discovered early as a kid in the school library, along with Zane Grey.  Giles A Lutz.  Merle Constiner.  Nye.  Trimble.  Hogan.  Shirreffs.  Patten.  Cord.  Lomax.  Most of ’em I found in those ACE Doubles — a great buy for a kid with his own summer wages… But my fave Western writer became Tom West.  His language.  His characters.  A wry, wry humour. Recently, in Tribute to Tom, I’ve put together his complete published book list. Yes, and with uncommon audacity I call it “complete.” If you know of any additional titles, I’d love to hear from you.  In fact, it would be great to learn of more Tom West titles!  Unknown.  Unread. So here’s my TOM WEST BOOK LIST: Meddling Maverick (1944) Bushwack Basin (1945) Gambler’s Gold* (1946) Trouble Trail (1946) Renegade Range (1946) Six-gun Showd...

James Oliver Curwood - Writer of Canadian Mounties

Image
JAMES OLIVER CURWOOD     When James Oliver Curwood (born in 1879) was expelled from school in his birthplace of Owosso, Michigan at age 16, it was a blessing in disguise. It began a wandering life that took him to the wilds of northern Canada. He traveled by canoe, by snow shoe and by dog sled, throughout the Peace River country, the Hudson Bay wilderness and the Arctic tundra. He spent as much as six months out of a year in the Canadian wilderness, even building log cabins to live in.  He enjoyed hunting for meat and for sport, until an encounter with an enraged grizzly bear that could have killed him — but didn’t. First as a reporter, then as a short story writer and novelist, he would spend the rest of his life telling of his wilderness travels. His translation of the Cree meaning of Manitoba — “God’s Country” — would become a world renowned phrase. While best remembered for his masterwork KAZAN THE WOLF DOG, his many other Northwesterns wer...
